October is one of my favorite months of the year. Temperatures are cooling down, but it is not quite dark all the time yet. And it's Halloween month! Halloween is highly ranked as one of my favorites holidays. I mean, it is one of the only times of the year where it is socially acceptable to dress up as an adult. And as Halloween approaches, the pumpkin obsession is still going strong!

With the doughnuts last week, and pumpkin spice lattes almost on the daily, I want pumpkin everything! And while you can go to Trader Joe's to find an endless supply of pumpkin products, I wanted something a little different.

When was the last time you've ever seen or had a pumpkin cocktail before? If you are like me, you haven't. Pumpkin works well with everything, so why wouldn't it work well with alcohol??

Well, while there are some skeptics, I was very proud of my pumpkin creation. I used a 5 year aged rum as my base, since the caramel and molasses notes pair well with pumpkin. And adding a cinnamon liqueur was the obvious choice {pumpkin + spice = <3}. Add a touch of simple syrup for sweetness, and finish off with a heavy dash of bitters. 

Seriously, bitters make this cocktail. I was tasting this as I went, and without the bitters, you taste a lot more alcohol. It didn't go down as smoothly as I would have liked. But add some Crude Bitters to the mix, and you have a restaurant worthy cocktail. 

The Crude Bitters is a local company to North Carolina, making small-batch, unique bitters. While the exact bitters I used may be hard to find, they have a similar version of their "Attawanhood" bitters on their website. {Or if you live in Charlotte, check out the Savory Spice Shop}. 

Perfect cocktail for the fall season or your upcoming Halloween party. Next time, I really want to add a bit of dry ice to the cocktail for a spooky effect!

Pumpkin Martini

Makes one cocktail

  • 3 oz. El Dorado 5-Year Demerara Rum
  • 1 oz. simple syrup (ideally made using
  • 1/2 oz. cinnamon schnapps
  • 1 heaping Tablespoons organic canned pumpkin
  • 2-3 dashes of Crude vanilla, clove, cinnamon bitters (similar)

Combine all ingredients into a shaker glass. Fill glass 2/3 of the way up with ice, and shake vigorously (until your hands are ice cold). 

Strain and serve in a martini or coupe glass.
